Julia shares her journey Teaching Hypnobirthing alongside her doula work

Uncategorized Sep 13, 2023

Julia trained with us to become a Hypnobirthing teacher to complement her doula training, here she tells us why this is a perfect match and shares some tips for those who are wanting to become Hypnobirthing teachers too.

I am Julia, a Mum of two, a Doula and Hypnobirthing teacher, living in Leeds, West Yorkshire, my business is Baba Doula Services. I am really passionate about supporting expectant parents, helping them to have a positive birth experience, by feeling calm, confident and in control. I have always had an interest and passion in pregnancy and birth. After I became a doula, I knew I wanted to do a hypnobirthing teacher training course. I had read and heard about how powerful hypnobirthing is and the positive mindset for birth, that it creates. Hypnobirthing courses are different to antenatal courses, which don’t teach you about the power of the mind, the mind body connection during birth and how to have a calm birth. The mind controls a lot about how we feel about birth and so many people fear birth, because of the stories they’ve heard or because they don’t fully understand birth. To really help couples to prepare for birth, remove that fear and have much better odds of a positive birth experience, I needed to become a hypnobirthing teacher too.

Julia tells us how she balances her life with children around her work...

I balance my work life balance by setting time aside for my business. I make pockets of time to write a blog or a social media post. I am able to be flexible when I work, which allows me to still enjoy being a Mum and being able to be there for my kids. Sometimes, I might enjoy having a day out with the kids and then spend the evening working on my website, talking to clients, visiting clients or working on admin tasks. I love the work that I do, so I enjoy using my evenings to do work. It never really feels like work.

What have been your biggest achievements since training to become a hypnobirthing teacher?

So far in my hypnobirthing business, my biggest achievements have been getting my first 1:1 clients. I was so nervous about that first session. Although I have taught antenatal sessions to lots of clients before and I feel calm and confident, with the sessions just flowing freely and naturally, teaching a set schedule for the first time, made me feel very nervous that I would forget something or be unsure of what I was meant to talk about. To overcome my nerves, I practised what I preach. I did a rehearsal to myself before the session. I visualised doing the session, so that my brain thought I’d done it before. It made me feel so much more confident when I delivered the session to my clients. I read the hypnosis script to myself several times beforehand, so that I got my tone right and didn’t stumble over any words. The session couldn’t have gone any better and that first couple doing my hypnobirthing course couldn’t have been any more perfect for me. They were my ideal client and engaged with every element of the session, including the birth partner. A few days after the session, the couple told me how lovely the hypnosis script was at the end and how my voice was so calm and relaxing. They said that they really enjoyed the session, learnt so much from it, sleeping really well that night and how they were feeling so much more positive about their upcoming birth. Getting feedback like this feels so special and really gives you a confidence boost.

Julia's top tips for anyone thinking about becoming a Hypnobirthing teacher...

Train with Love Your Birth and go for it. If you love supporting others, love pregnancy and birth and want flexibility that fits in with your home life, a hypnobirthing teacher is for you! Being able to share your knowledge, experience and passion with expectant parents is such an honour. Giving them support and helping them to have a positive birthing experience, feels so fulfilling. Not only will you learn so much about teaching hypnobirthing, but you will gain so much for yourself too. It has really helped my confidence grow, doing things that I never thought I could or would do. A lot of that has come from the support and encouragement that Abby gives. Plus, the hypnobirthing techniques that you will learn on the training course, can be applied to any situation, not just birth, so they are skills for life. Training to become a hypnobirthing teacher with Love Your Birth will make you feel so supported in your teaching. The community support and teacher’s toolkit that you will receive are excellent. The CPD is ongoing, so you are always learning and developing. You will never feel alone, and Abby is always there to hold your hand, at any stage that you are at, in your business.

What's next for Julia's business...

I need to move out of my comfort zone, to get more visible and I want to be gaining clients via word of mouth and recommendations. I want more clients on a regular basis and I want to start doing group hypnobirthing courses.
